Google’s proposed $750 million acquisition of AdMob looks at first glance like a move sure to extend its online ad dominance to the mobile realm. But Google isn’t the first major Internet player to gobble up a mobile ad network to gain an early advantage in the space. Over the weekend, Sprint and a number of other companies agreed to invest another $1.5 billion into Clearwire, the growing provider of WiMax services. Notably absent on the list of financiers was Google, which has previously given cash to Clearwire.

Last month Skype was in talks to acquire VoIP startup Gizmo5. It was a perfect backup plan in case all that IP litigation didn’t work out. Gizmo5′s SIP infrastructure could theoretically replace Skype’s proprietary P2P back end.
